Student Spotlight: Corey Stout, PhD Candidate
2024-2025 Rice University Intern, The Menil Collection

Learn more about why Corey applied to work at The Menil:

“The Menil was one of the first art museums I visited when I was a teenager. My exposure to works there led to me pursuing an education in both studio practice and art history. I also came to Rice because I was interested in how rural areas of the Gulf Coast contributed to modern art production. This interest, in turn, led to my dissertation topic on Forrest Bess, who exemplifies the rich and complicated world of modern art with his connections to rural Texas, New York City, and Mexico City. The Menil has been extremely helpful in preliminary research for my dissertation on Bess. Not only does the Menil house some of his paintings, but the Menil archives also contains important letters between Bess and Dominique de Menil, and my conversations with archivists and curators at the Menil steered me towards important materials, histories, and exhibitions related to Bess.”
