Students in Professors Denva Gallant and Olivia Young's "HART 308: Black Visual Culture: From "Lemonade" to the "They Not Like Us"" had the privilege of meeting with Amarie Gipson at The Reading Room HTX last week where they discussed Beyoncè, Cowboy Carter, the black freedom struggle, and late stage capitalism.
The Reading Room, a library curated and created by Amarie Gipson, is a Black art reference library with an emphasis on the American South that does the work of creating community in Houston. This new class was an excellent opportunity to connect Rice students with vibrant creatives in the city and to show them that there is much more to Houston than just Rice.
Prof. Denva Gallant will be leading two courses this fall: "HART 230: Early Medieval Art" and "HART 337: Radical Bodies in Medieval Art" (co-taught with Eilis Coughlin, PhD candidate) - seats are open so register now.
