Kyle G. Sweeney (Ph.D. '17), Assistant Professor of Art History at Winthrop University, recently published Lateness and Modernity in Medieval Architecture (Leiden: Brill, 2023). Drawing on case studies from Cyprus to the Dominican Republic, the edited volume explores historiographical, methodological, and theoretical concerns related to the study of medieval architecture, bringing to the fore the meanings and functions of the Gothic in specific contexts of use and display. The book received a Kress Foundation Research and Publication Grant from the International Center of Medieval Art and is available online through Fondren Library’s website. Dr. Sweeney’s next major project involves completing the 500-mile long medieval pilgrimage trail to Santiago de Compostela, a hike he started in 2012 while a student in Professor Emerita Neagley’s seminar on the visual culture of medieval pilgrimage .
Kyle completed his dissertation in the Department of Art History in 2017 under the direction of Dr. Linda Neagley. His research is primarily concerned with the social, spatial, and ritual fabric of late medieval cities.
