The Department of Art History took over the Big Apple during spring break as Professors Gordon Hughes and Joseph Manca led a group of eager undergraduates up north for the annual HART in NYC travel program.
Over the course of five days, the group visited important museums and architectural sites in the city, including El Museo del Barrio, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, Frick Madison, MoMA, National Archives at New York City, and the New York Public Library where the group privately met with the curator of the Print Collection. The faculty also led students on guided walking tours to examine notable architecture around town with visits to Saint Thomas Church, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, and other diverse buildings around Lower Manhattan.
Glimpses of their journey together can be seen below, but to view more images of our NYC spring break program and to see which sites the group visited around the Big Apple this year, follow us on Instagram or Facebook.
The New York trip is open to current Rice University undergraduate art history majors and any student with a demonstrable interest in the history of art. Undergraduates are strongly encouraged to apply every year during the fall when submissions are open. Airfare, hotel, and museum admittance are all covered by the department.
