The ICAA (International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) recently announced the winners of the 2023 Peter C. Marzio Award for Outstanding Research in 20th-Century Latin American and Latino Art and awarded Ginevra Bria, Art History PhD student, Honorable Mention for her essay “Against Modernist Primitivism: Cildo Meireles’s Cruzeiro do Sul and the ‘The Savage Slot’” for “its theoretically rich analysis of a single work by Cildo Meireles and for its creative engagement with a transhistorical range of ICAA archival documents.”
Ginevra’s essay will be published in a 2024 issue of Working Papers, an online publishing platform for emerging research that engages primary documents and offers reflections on archival practices in Latin American and Latinx art history. Under her advisor Prof. Fabiola López-Durán, Ginevra’s research at Rice focuses on Brazilian modern and contemporary art and environmental anthropology.
Granted yearly to one graduate and one undergraduate student, the Peter C. Marzio Awards recognizes emerging scholarship that makes innovative use of documents in the ICAA Digital Archive.
