Student Spotlight: Evan Joachim '25
2024 Mary Ellen Hale Lovett Travel Fellow
Double majoring in Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations (AMC) and Classical Studies, Evan Joachim will be using the HART Lovett Fellowship to attend two archaeological field schools in Italy: the Roman excavations at Cosa and the Etruscan site of Poggio Civitate.
Evan was also awarded the Charles Garside AMC Summer Travel Grant to support his travels to Italy!
Learn more about his Etruscan studies over the summer:
“Alongside the archaeological work I will be conducting, I would like to research the ways in which Etruscan artifacts are displayed in Italian museums given the direct cultural tie that Italian curators have to the heritage, particularly in the region of Tuscany. To do this, I would like to visit museums and survey their curatorial choices. Notably, the Etruscan site of Poggio Civitate has an associated museum in Murlo. I hope to build upon this research for a senior thesis which would explore differences in curatorial practices/care for Etruscan artifacts within Italian and American museums. This exploration would be done with reference to archaeology’s ability to construct national/regional/personal identity, thus combining my experience at the field schools with this museum research. “
The Lovett Travel Fellowship provides students with the opportunity to enhance their educational experience at Rice by traveling to significant sites to conduct field research in art history and architectural history.
