Congratulations to PhD candidates, Marge Steurbaut and Dallin Evans for receiving the Samuel H. Kress Foundation Grant for their graduate student conference, Materiality and the Making of Art, The two-day conference brought together graduate students from a wide range of backgrounds and institutions across the globe to explore the role of materials and their vital impact in the creation of art.
Interested about the process of putting together a large-scale graduate project like this? Watch their interview here.
Presentations topics varied from digital material programming, art history and its making, as well as scientific approaches to artistic production, and embodied processes: reconstruction, mediation, and experimental methods. Creative workshops were also available to those interested in a hands-on experience, featuring a class on glass-blowing and painting, pottery, and printmaking with the help of Fondren Library's Athena Press.
