Marge Steurbaut, Art History PhD student, presented at her first academic presentation and represented Rice abroad last Saturday at Symposium XXIII for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting held in Leuven and Brussels with her lecture titled “The Brussels Cartoons: Division of Labor And International Interdisciplinary Collaboration In 17th Century Stained-Glass Practices.”
Focused on “Cross-Media Perspectives; Technical Studies of Art on Panel, Paper and Parchment (1400-1600),” the three day symposium this year examined art in a variety of media and supports: panel paintings, painting on parchment and canvas, drawings, cartoons, sketches, model- and sketchbooks, prints and manuscript illuminations.
Marge holds great interest in Netherlandish stained glass. In 2018, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Antwerp University (Belgium) in Conservation Studies with a specialization in stained glass. She completed her master’s degree in 2020 at the University of York (U.K.) in Stained-Glass Conservation and Heritage Management, with distinction. Her master’s dissertation discussed the role of the cartoon in 17th century stained-glass making and the working relationship between master glass painter and designer.
