Student Spotlight: Cali Liu '25
2024 Mary Ellen Hale Lovett Travel Fellow
Rising senior Cali Liu, double majoring in Visual Arts and Psychology, is another recipient of the Lovett Travel Fellowship this year and will use the award to study the craft of papermaking in Japan over the summer.
“I am excited at the opportunity to explore the significance of paper in both traditional and modern Japanese culture, examining its roots in forestry practice and sustainability, the craftsmanship involved in the making of it, its role in architectural design, and its use as a versatile medium. This comprehensive project will be divided into four overarching themes, each of which covers a stage of the life cycle of paper: origin, washi, utility, and vessel. During my month in Japan, I hope to research and explore the material, medium, and process in depth, with a week dedicated to understanding each aspect of such a living and breathing craft.”
The Lovett Travel Fellowship provides students with the opportunity to enhance their educational experience at Rice by traveling to significant sites to conduct field research in art history and architectural history.
