Rice University will host its second annual Juneteenth lecture series, “Juneteenth and Emancipations to Come,” virtually on Thursday, June 17th from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CST. The series aims to explore ideas and issues central to the holiday and to commence a process of reflection and discussion on the history of racial injustice in order to begin working towards a more diverse and inclusive community at Rice.

The lecture series will include a panel of short talks by Rice faculty and students focusing on blackness and future freedoms. The series will conclude with an update from the Task Force on Slavery, Segregation and Racial Injustice, who aim to investigate Rice’s past with respect to slavery, segregation and racial injustice and to identify suggestions for Rice’s future.

Department of Art History Ph.D. candidate Adrienne Rooney, who serves as the co-organizer of the recently launched Racial Geography Project, will start the discussions of the third session at 11:30am CST, followed by Dr. Alexander Byrd, Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Dr. Caleb McDaniel, Chair of the Department of History.

The lecture series is open to the public, but Zoom registration is required. Additional information on the event can be found here.
