2023 HART in the World: Rome

May 9 - May 30, 2023

HITW Group

The Department of Art History was very excited to have HART in the World (HITW) up and running again this year from May 9-30. The department’s HART in the World study abroad program brings a group of ten undergraduates to an international metropolis for a three week on-site course every other summer accompanied by a spring semester seminar at Rice, and this year the cohort headed to Rome led by Prof. Sophie Crawford-Brown, Assistant Professor of Art History and Director of Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations Program, and Eilis Coughlin, Art History PhD student. During the course of the summer program, students were led on guided tours to prominent cultural and archaeological sites, met with art historians from the American Academy in Rome, and journeyed on trips to neighboring historical cities like Cerveteri and Siena. The competitive program accepts any Rice undergraduate regardless of major, and the department covers airfare, lodging, and site admissions.

In the fall, a student-organized exhibition will be installed in Herring Hall’s first-floor corridor chronicling their journey through Italy. To view more pictures of their time in Rome, follow us on Instagram or Facebook for their daily captures.
