Aja Martin

Art History Ph.D. candidate Aja Martin has been recently awarded a 2021 Fellowship at the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) in New York. The fellowship brings together emerging scholars from diverse academic backgrounds in an interactive and collaborative environment at CIMA's New York location.  Aja will conduct research on the work of Mario Schifano, made between 1960 to 1965, and the focus of the 2020-2021 exhibition program. She looks forwards to the opportunity to work among Schifano's lesser-known works, and to sharing her research with colleagues and the general public -- according to the aims of the institution.

Aja Martin writes on modern art in Europe with a focus on Italy.  Her current research on the artist Lucio Fontana's lesser-studied series attempts to understand how these works, in various media, impact our understanding of his seemingly nihilist claims for painting.
