Collage and its Histories (3 cr.)

This class will explore the centrality of collage to the development of the 20th century art and film.
Beginning with the seminal achievements of Picasso and Braque, we will examine works across geographical and medium boundaries, including Dada photomontage, early avant-garde film, 1960s happenings, and the reformulation of collage aesthetics in 1980s postmodernism.

Pop Art (3 cr.)

This seminar will examine the history and significance of Pop art by looking in detail at three or four primary figures associated with the term; likely subjects include Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Hamilton, among others.  Visits to local museum collections and attention to theoretical writings on art and mass culture are planned.
