Alec Mishory, Schusterman Visiting Israeli Professor in Israeli Studies
Dr. Alec Mishory is the Schusterman Visiting Israeli Professor at Rice University for the 2009- 2010 academic year. He received his PhD from The City University of New York in 1997 and has taught at Tel Aviv University and The Open University of Israel. His dissertation focuses on the iconography, social, cultural and political aspects of a series of lithographs made in London in 1820 by Theodore Gericault. His article on A Parleytic Woman, one of the series' prints, has appeared in Gazette des Beaux Arts. In the comprehensive exhibition catalogue of Gericault's drawings and lithographs from the collection of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris (1997), he published two articles and several entries for the various prints that were included.
Dr. Mishory published all the art history textbooks for the Open University Press in Israel (
Renaissance Art in Italy,
Art History: An Introduction,
Still Life: From Depicted Objects to Real Objects,
Israeli Emblems and Icons). His research of Israeli culture has brought forth two books:
Lo and Behold: Zionist Icons in Israeli Culture and
Joseph Budko and H.N. Bialik's Complete Works Edition of 1923: Modern Hebrew Poetry and Art in Harmony. In 2009 he was curator of an exhibition dedicated to the Israeli art field during the state's first year (1948), accompanied by a comprehensive essay published in the exhibition catalogue. He is currently at work on two books:
1948: Hebrew Art Leading to the Future and
The First Decade of Art in Israel.
