Course Description:

Nero is often rememberedas the tyrannical emperor who let Rome burn and gorged on ill‐gotten luxury; his successors conceived as good emperors, who
built the Colosseum, Imperial Palace and the vast majority of Rome’s remaining monuments. In this course you will question whether things were so
straightforward. Graduate students will be expected to complete additional readings and write a substantial research paper, due at the end of the semester.
