Marcia Brennan, associate professor of art history, received her Ph.D. from Brown University in 1997. She has taught at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her book Painting Gender, Constructing Theory: The Alfred Stieglitz Circle and American Formalist Aesthetics, was published by the MIT Press in 2001. A sequel volume entitled Modernism's Masculine Subjects: Matisse, The New York School, and Post-Painterly Abstraction, was published by the MIT Press in the Fall of 2004. She is currently at work on a new book entitled Curating Consciousness: Mysticism and the Modern Museum, which will focus on such pioneering figures in modern art as James Johnson Sweeney, Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Pierre Soulages, Alberto Burri, Eduardo Chillida, and Jean Tinguely. This study will be published by the MIT Press in 2008. In addition to teaching courses in twentieth century American and European art, she is a Faculty Affiliate in the Program for the Study of Women and Gender.
